| Hello there! I'm Jo Holman... the resident artist! I've been producing & selling artwork for over 30 years and I hope you enjoy looking at what I can do with average family photos. My work speaks for itself. I invite you to shop around to other sites that offer similar services and see for yourself that my prices are some of the lowest on the internet! In addition, I work on each image I receive with the individual attention it requires to create as pleasing and as unique an image as possible. I hope you'll allow me the opportunity to create a photo related treasure for you!
Once Upon A Time...
I was once influenced by society to believe that only hand drawn or hand painted images held any meaningful value. In the world I grew up in, computers were considered tools for big business or expensive toys for the wealthy. For over 30 years I hand drew and hand painted everything that caught my attention, whether it was something I saw with my own eyes or something I saw in a photograph. Many of my traditionally produced still lifes, portraits and landscapes were created from photos I found in books or magazines, and I never felt a moment of guilt for trying to artistically recreate a photographed image and give it my own artistic flair. I became obsessed with photo-realism and became quite good rendering realistic drawings with graphite pencils, charcoal, and pastels.
Until a few years ago, I believed that using a computer to create an enhanced version of a photograph or an artistic image seemed more like a method of cheating than creating. However, I was reminded of a comment that a favorite art professor made during a college art class regarding a similar comment, which was made about what is a now a far-out-dated enlarging machine. My professor explained that there are many tools and mediums that an artist utilizes to render the desired two-dimensional image, and just as you wouldn’t criticize a carpenter for using a hammer to drive a nail, you shouldn’t criticize the tools an artist uses to create their art.

| Today, I know that a computer is a viable art tool and a medium all in one... Contrary to my former beliefs, computer generated images are NOT easy to create. Now that I have some experience in manipulating photo images and creating original artwork on a computer, I promise that I work just as hard at creating the desired effect working with my computer as I ever did working by hand. Consider...if you will, that before photography was invented, artists rendered images primarily from memory. After photography came along, young artists began rendering images from a photo of their subject and “traditional artists” condemned them for not using traditional methods for creating original masterpieces. Today, we have “traditional artists” who condemn the use of computers to create original digital artwork inspired and crafted from an image in a photograph. It seems there is a pattern here. For more than a century, artists have begun their work with a photo of their subject. Then they painstakingly recreate the image of the subject from the image in the photo. Hopefully, the artist is uniquely creative and enhances and embellishes the image to create a more artistic finished image. I do pretty much the same thing, only I manipulate the image of the subject in the photo until I achieve the illusion of a hand drawn or hand painted image. This is NOT accomplished with a simple click of the “pencil drawing” or “brush stroke” features within my art programs. I often spend several days working on an image to achieve the desired effects. As you can see by the examples posted on the Digital Portraits page, they turn out beautifully. They're even more impressive when they are printed on quality art paper or stretched canvas & framed.
No matter what you have in mind for your photo(s)... from a simple restoration, to a digital portrait, to a full scale slideshow... I promise to always strive to create a unique artistic treasure that you will be proud to share with your family & friends or to give as a gift to a special someone in your life. |
